Kicking

art by GDBee

Do you ever take a really deep breath, just to make sure you still can? It's one of the ways I remind myself I'm still alive. Still kicking. I always wondered why people said that, "Still kicking." It's always said so dryly, as if there's a better alternative to literally being alive. Funnily enough, the alternative is to kick the bucket. I did a bit of research and it refers to the notion of when you stand on a bucket to hang yourself, you kick it to finish the job. So in a way, "kicking it" is an odd way of saying you haven't finished the job yet. I guess that makes sense. But it doesn't really explain why people say it.

When I think of that phrase, I usually imagine an older person. Looking off into the distance, with bitterness on their face. "Still kicking." Usually a telltale of a someone mentally removed from their youth. A little too comfortable in their mortality. As older people tend to be. All of my grandparents have always been very casual with the idea of their impending deaths. They had all already passed 50 before I was born, and the ones who remain spend their days in a quiet routine. Praying and celebrating with the time they have left. I've never heard "still kicking" from their mouths exactly, but I doubt that's a common phrase in Nigeria. Instead, I've heard "still standing" or "still active" or some Igbo idiom teaching me to cherish my elders. There is no doubt gratefulness in them for the years they've been granted. But on some level, they acknowledge their time is done. They've shifted from hard working providers to cared for spectators in their families, waiting out the gift of time.

Out of all the gifts I've ever received, time is most definitely the oddest one. It's miraculous how it even got into my hands in the first place. So many variants of my being have fought to get here, so how I won is a mystery for the universe. I wish this fact made me grateful for it, but as much as I say I am, I really don't act like it. I've spent so much of my life wishing for redos or reverses or backtracks. Which is so odd. I'm 20 years old. There's at least a good 50 years ahead of me yet I feel so deep into life already. It's so hard, reminding myself that there is so much left for me still. The love that feels like the end of the world today, won't even hold a candle to the love I'll feel tomorrow.

You know I started this blog when I was 14. I would've thrown a fit if I saw how my life would be in 6 years. I hated science in middle school and wanted to become a full time writer. Seeing as I just failed an exam for linear circuits and systems, that didn't happen. And In a really weird way, I hope that my life at 26 makes me throw a fit too. I hope my mindsets change. I hope my circle grows. I hope my body grows. My skills change. My interests shift. My focus narrows. Because well, that's all you can do.

Short Film Review: Bent Out Of Shape

I used to do these all the time. Let's get it. :3

Bent Out Of Shape

So the story starts off with a seemingly uniform neighborhood. A whole bunch of squares everywhere. A square woman and her kid are sitting on the porch when a circle girl moves in. She looks like a Sally to me so I'll call her Sally. Sally brings color to everything and rounds out everything. Right off the bat, I'm loving the visual metaphors. The Square Mom is very aversive to Sally, which is very understandable seeing as she basically infected the square girl. Also she tried to shake with her left hand. Back in my village, she basically just declared war.

Anyways, Sally continues trying to get in with the square people. Square Mom is not having it. But the kid is curious, and also miserable. They have a bike with square wheels, of course she wants to meet the round girl. After one really close call where the kid starts literally transforming, Square Mom builds a fence. While I understand the metaphor at play, I'd do the same thing as a mom. Because what do you mean my child touched you and is now going through metamorphosis.

So Square Girl doesn't listen. She climbs over the fence and now everyone is round. Hooray!

This is actually a pretty tame start to use to continue these. I don't really see a deeper message except to just be open to new things. It was quite enjoyable and the colors are pretty. 6/10.

Whore

Yesterday, while on break--

from pitying myself--

I saw a note. For a date.

An address. "Don't be late."

So today, I called off

and dolled my best doll

and saw myself through the gates.

I walk in, lights dim.

The rose bushes, trimmed.

For a second, I almost felt safe.

I'm quick to undress.

Faster than the rest.

Honestly, I don't know why.

I bare my spirit for yours,

hoping that for sure,

your heart, on mine, you'd place.

I stand there, naked,

waiting, faded--

there's always a chance that you'll flake.

"Whore," your tongue whips.

Every inch of me--flinch.

And you tear your gaze away.

I scrunch at my rolls,

my trauma, my soils.

I dumped it all in hopes you'd erase.

Slowly I accept

that you'll never undress

and I'll never see more than your face.

So I carry my soul

and I idle alone,

looking around just in case.

All I want is to be seen,

and to equally see,

so then a whore, a whore I must be.

Break

When I was a child, I once said shut up in front of my father. My brother did something, I can't remember what. Immediately, he corrected me. That was bad word, we don't use bad words, especially not on people we love. I didn't say shut up again until after my tenth birthday. I was so mad that day. A boy at school told me I was a thot. I didn't know what it meant at the time, but people around me started laughing. I was so embarrassed and so confused. I allowed myself to step out of character.

As the years passed, I've found I have very different values from my parents and treat language very differently. If they saw what I said in my day-to-day, they'd have a heart attack. However, I've always remained careful in what I say to loved ones. I hold so much back, I become a glass wall ready to shatter with anger. I've noticed that people don't really care much for broken glass shards. Even when you piece it back together, it's still considered a hazard.

So now I ask myself, how do I not break? How do I release my words while containing my composure? I haven't had much practice. Turns out that when you only talk to people who care about you, you don't have that many arguments. All I really have is time and space to reflect. And a bludgeoning urge to put indescribable feelings onto a paper. Or a screen. Digital media is slowly disappearing, after all.

Over A Man

art by GDBee

I lost my mind over a man. I wouldn't recommend it.

The last time I spoke to him, his words were so nasty, I lost all feelings. But you find that repairing the part of you that loved him is miles easier than repairing the part of you that loved yourself. This very blog basically died off the second he made a negative comment about it. I can't even remember what he said, but it was enough to kill my spirit at the time. I stopped reading reading fanfics and webtoons. I stopped finding new musicals to listen to. I stopped randomly picking new languages to learn. I can't remember the last time I read a new folklore legend. I don't even remember the last time I sat and read a book. Or watched short from an animation student on YouTube. I stopped randomly baking. My last jar of homemade apple jelly was almost two years ago. I stopped listening to ambient music like Khai Dreams or Forrest or love-sadKID. I stopped checking archives for love letters nobles from the 1700s wrote to each other. I stopped spending my weekends crying to romcoms that only I knew about.

Every thing that made me interesting before I met him, I stopped doing it the second he made a comment on it. I replaced these things with Instagram posts and fit checks. I watched the shows that he liked. I listened to the music he liked. I dressed the way that he liked.

And the worst part was how long it went on for. I wonder how much of the change was natural progression and how much of it was me being ashamed of myself. Like for example, I definitely listen to a lot more Nigerian music than I did two years ago. And I've finally decided to focus on Odinani and properly practice. But with webtoons--everyone has kind of grown out of them, no? So how can I really blame it on him making fun of me? Except, I've been catching up on stories I haven't read in years and I honestly did miss them.

And this is just what I did to myself. I'm too ashamed to write out what I did to other people. When it came down to it, I always wanted to trust that he had my best interests in mind. Even when we did split and stopped talking, it was always "for the best." I trusted that even if we weren't together, he accepted me for who I was and only pushed me to do things to improve my life. Which is what led me to lash out on those around me who were only trying to help.

In hindsight, a couple of the people in my circle did deserve the lashing out. Too many people regularly chose to say what they wanted me to believe/do instead of just being straight. And I wasn't stupid enough to take it wholeheartedly. So I instead lived in limbo, debating the versions of the same story I'd heard and choosing who I wanted to call a liar. It was misery.

Unfortunately, as I look back, all of this was inevitable. The best friend who "suddenly" switched up, the man who "suddenly" didn't want me, the people who were "suddenly" tired of me--it wasn't sudden. I just maintained hope in a space that had nothing to look at.

When I could've placed that hope in myself. My grades have slipped, my drive has slipped, my womanhood has slipped. I am making a promise to myself, from now on, I guard my womanhood with everything I have. This has been a massive lesson and I have to learn from it. Do not be afraid to cut off. Do not be afraid to let go. Yes, it hurts. Yes, you'll cry. Yes, you will break down and feel like the world is ending. But the real end of the world is when the brain fog finally clears and you realize that you were too busy giving your all, that there's nothing left for yourself.

Suddenly

art by GDBee

Suddenly, I don't recognize my life anymore.

The very people who promised to protect me,

are the people I protect myself from.

My room is no longer where it used to be.

My siblings don't snore on the other side of the wall anymore.

I don't sneak out after school anymore.

I don't eat my mother's cooking for dinner every day,

ramen and sandwiches have bided me by.

I don't argue with my parents every day,

I barely see their faces some days.

I always knew this day would come,

ever since I turned 18 I've been in transformation.

Everything is folding over, coming and going, for the better or worse.

I just keep making the mistake

of expecting tomorrow to look like today.

I can feel how slippery this life is,

I can barely hold on.

Suddenly, I am responsible for myself.

What I wear, where I go, who I talk to, what I eat--it's all my decision.

I don't get unwanted opinions anymore.

No more "I'm not allowed to.

I find myself choosing my own principles

and defining my own moral compass.

And as I push myself to stress over fewer,

I find myself in less dismay.

Suddenly, my eyes have dried.

My heart has settled.

Life is quiet.

There's so much to do,

so much more than I've ever had to do,

but I'm free.

Imagine telling eighteen-year-old Uche

that the reason she always felt stuck

is because of who she was stuck on.

The very people I thought were uplifting me.

Were tearing down every ounce of progress I made.

Suddenly, I'm thankful you're gone,

I'm free.

I'm twenty.

Poem Prompt: Find Yourself

art by GDBEE

To find something is to identify it.

When something is lost, it is unknown, it can vanish without a trace.

But to find it again, you reunite. You hug that thing and keep it close.

To find something is to know it dearly.

I fear I may never know myself.

I change so often, react so much.

The days I act without speaking are inexplicable gaps in my knowledge.

What if I never understand those moments? How far can I ever really learn myself without understanding?

What about the transitions? Those periods where you shuffle through the day to day as it morphs around you?

Those transitions that are so painstakingly helpless but euphorically electrifying?

The past year has been so unreal. That couldn't have been me.

Each day felt so foreign--I've been happy. I think.

Some days I feel so far removed from yesterday's me.

That was the girl I hope no one ever remembers. Some days, I cripple myself in fear of becoming like her.

 Yet...who was she?

I don't remember last yesterday's me. What was it like to be her?

I miss her.

I've forgotten her...she can vanish now.

Do I wish that for her? How far can my pursuit of tomorrow's me go without her?

Quite frankly, I don't think I'll ever find myself.

I will eventually become tomorrow's me.

And when the time come I shall be next tomorrow's me.

But it's a natural process. I may never purposefully do it.

So why do I put so much effort into trying?

I don't know, I seem interesting.

Rejuvination

art by GDBee

I haven't written a single creative sentence in entirely way too long. College, am I right?

Life has a funny way of strapping you down. It throws thing after thing at you, demanding you to split your attention more and more. Eventually, you choose to look away from certain things. What seems to be more important just needs a certain amount of attention that you can't even imagine splitting for a moment.

But eventually, in the midst of the chaos, you start to drown. The reality of only paying mind to what seems most important is to let go of what brings you joy. Quick gratification is relinquished in favor of building up something more. It's so easy to fall behind on hobbies, people, even yourself. Ever since this semester started, I've had several breakdowns realizing that life just keeps trudging on without me. I decided to study out of state, meaning the people most important to me have to be called. I'm being updated on my siblings' lives, my friends' lives. I passively watch as they continue their lives. Meanwhile, I chose to do engineering. The work just keeps coming and it's so mentally draining. The hope of a dream career is the only thing keeping me going.

Also, writing. Unironically, I write so often in my free time. I've mostly resigned to only writing lyrics, but I've come to enjoy it so much. Playing with words, rhythms, and references in a quick 30-second snippet can be such a picker-upper. So, expect an influx of rap/song lyrics. I'm not sure what else I want to continue on the blog. I'm not as interested in the movie reviews but I definitely want to continue Turtle Thoughts and Poem Prompts. And stories...god, I haven't written a story in ages. I want to focus on The Will of Blood and 80 Lovelies, so I think my WattPad might officially be done. Unless I get some inspiration to continue.

Will 80 Lovelies be redone? Absolutely.

I'm incredibly excited to be back. I feel as though this blog would serve as a really good emotional and creative outlet. I'm really glad I chose to not pursue writing professionally. I allowed it to be a relax pad to fall back on and I'm so thankful now to have it.

Okay, see you all soon. :)

P.S. I'm rebranding. :))

Lyrics Over Beat: Myself ("Peach" - Kehlani X Daniel Caesar R&B Type Beat丨Prod. chillingcat

[Verse 1]

Asking my fathers above for some peace

My guidance to stand up and finally achieve

The dreams that I see every night when I sleep

Wakin' to rust is so straining on me

Doing my best, holding on to the creak

Mending the bucket to fetch from the stream

Heading out soon, cause I just turned sixteen

Prepare for new waters, a new tsunami

[Pre-Chorus]

Three months to breathe now

Fill it up somehow

Classes and working and proving I know how

To climb up and grow

To move on my own

Lookin' ahead I just feel so alone

Chances slip by

I have to try

Reaching and searching for something of mine

Keep my head high

I'm falling each time

Pick it up, pack it up, look to the sky

[Chorus]

Cause I've got faith in myself (I'll keep moving)

I've got eyes on my prize (I will take it)

I've got love for myself

And wherever I end up

I promise you, I'll be alright

[Verse 3]

I'm looking at life, spread it out on a grid

A look into the future's always so grim

My chances at success always feeling so slim

And right next to it, I expect the brim

My cup'll overflow,

and even if it don't

I will its existence,

The gold's coming home

I speak my ambitions

I'll make them my own

My brilliance inhibits

my ideas to roam.

[Verse 4]

My spirit has changed with my balancing act

Juggling keeping my psyche intact

Along with my personal, I'm tryna pass

To do what I want to, I'm tryna top that

Life's getting quicker, less time to react

Adulthood is dawning, it's drawing on fast

18 will wash up and reroute my path

Destiny's calling, I'm not going back

[Pre-Chorus]

Two years til countdown

Fill it up somehow

Planning and prepping, and teaching myself how

To climb up and grow

To stand on my own

Reminding myself that I'm never alone

Chances slip by

I have to try

Reaching and searching for something of mine

Keep my head high

I'm falling each time

Pick it up, pack it up, look to the--

[Chorus]

I've got faith in myself (I'll keep moving)

I've got eyes on my prize (I will take it)

I've got love for myself

And wherever I end up

I promise you, I'll be just fine

Cause I'm still trusting myself (I'll keep moving)

I will wear my crown (I will wear it)

I've got love for myself

And wherever I end up

I promise you, I'll be alright

Movie Review: Geoff

An image from the movie, credit to VMLY&R NZ and Assembly Ltd

Geoff is a 2017 short film directed by Damon Duncan. According to the credits in the description, it's a campaign for Kraft Heinz Australia created by Y&R NZ(daughter organization of VMLY&R NZ) and Assembly Ltd. The main character is even described as loving "beanz." Geoff is about 3 minutes and 16 seconds long and was first released on Vimeo on September 3rd, 2017. It is now available on YouTube uploaded by CGMeetup and many others.

The story itself is heartwarming. It's about a freckled, curly-headed boy with a love for beans who grows up to be an innovator at Heinz. We see his love for each stage in life represented by his new creations. First, he creates The One for One, a can of beans that's the perfect size for one person--himself. Later on, he meets a beautiful woman from the spaghetti department and creates The One For Two. They get married and have a set of twins(who flip-flop their hair colors). Geoff, in Geoff style, creates The One For All. Then, in a small twist, he notices that he needed a snack size. The Lil' One is born.

Since the other two are him appreciating where he is in life, The Lil' One could be a representation of downsizing and settling. The One for One is a celebration of his promotion to Head of Innovation. He's establishing himself and drives his own success. The One for Two is a celebration of romance. He takes his skills and puts them to use to impress what will become his life partner. The One for Four is a celebration of his kids. He and his wife wound up having two at one time and his family doubled, so his innovation did as well. The Lil' One is the end of the uphill climb. Instead of getting bigger and bigger, he creates something bite-sized. He's no longer reaching to add something to his life or searching for more. He is where he needs to be and now moves only to provide for what he has, not gain more.

Poem Prompt: Take a Break

Take a break.

But I can't, not with this pile of to-dos.

Every second feels endless,

almost like I'm running on a loop.

How could I possibly even think

of putting down my pen and kicking up my feet?

There's a deadline on the calendar

8 am sharp next week.

Everything feels so out of my league,

way out of my caliber.

Take a break.

She says to me each time

I complain of never getting to sleep at night.

The bags grow under my eyes

as the energy within me dies.

I can no longer fight,

so I simply give up.

I've tried and I've tried.

It's time to raise the white flag, enough's enough.

I rest, despite my still full plate

and I wake up by daybreak.

The sun's rays are in my face

by the crack of dawn.

They sing as I yawn

not of exhaustion--but of relief.

I return to my desk and my overflowing planner

and have my seat and continue the chapter.

Last Day of School

Honey (Credit to Johnny Balik)

This is it. By the time this goes up, it will be the last day of the 2020-2021 school year. The end of an entirely virtual school year. And to think, I used to hate the thought of homeschooling. Although, distance learning really isn't the same as homeschooling from an overview. But still--I never thought I'd be here. An entire school year without meeting my teachers. Seeing my classmates was a rarity and getting out of the house was a treasure.

I grew a lot though. And I did a few things I'm proud of. Joined the math honor's society at my school and I started tutoring my peers. Also joined the newspaper club and wrote a few articles, I think I'll continue doing it next year. I started writing for service hours and planning my life out a bit. I did this back in 8th grade and it was really helpful, so I wanna get back into using a planner. I got to know my hair really well and I think I'm started to work with the thicc boi really well(yes, I'm keeping that name). He's in Bantu knots right now, but I think I'll do butterfly locs soon. I decided I want to try out for the poms team at my school next month so I've been practicing a lot. And I think my left pirouettes look good! My right...not so much.

My very first college class, through dual enrollment, started two weeks ago and I'm doing well right now. It's an introductory biology class, and I do enjoy biology. I decided to major in life sciences in my high school specialty program. My second college class started today, it's a math class. I looked at the syllabus and it reminds me a lot of my pre-calc and algebra 2 courses. I have both of my notebooks from those classes so I know I've done it before.

I've started keeping all my notebooks, from 9th and 10th grade that is. I think it helped me not freak out when I saw my course load for this summer and my junior year. It's like "You already know the basics, now just recall and build on it." It really isn't for actual reference--I'm too lazy to pull out an old notebook for something I could probably find in the class textbook.

As for which, I'm really entering my junior year. Two more years and I'm done with the public education system and will be pursuing an actual degree(which probably will be biochem). It's so crazy to me how fast I'm growing up. Like, I'm gonna have my first paid work experience this summer. I'm tryna get my driver's license too by August, just finished driver's ed. And, I'm entering the time period when I actually need to start getting my college situation together. This time next year I'll be gearing up to start sending in my applications. Then in two years, I'll be off.

I'm still taking all of it in. I'm really almost there. But at the same time, my childhood's almost over. All the easy summers, the dozens of friends, the unforgettable cartoons. I'll spend less time in my parent's house, on this bed, and more time out there, working and studying and actually adulting. I'd be lying if I said I'm not scared. But I'd also be lying if I said I'm not insanely excited. It's horrifying and exhilarating. Sometimes I'm just itching to turn to the next chapter, other days I just want everything to stop. It's like I'm always so confused and on the edge of an existential crisis. It's like...teenagehood.

What I try to tell myself is that the world will move how the world will move. What happened yesterday cannot be undone, but what happens tomorrow is unknown. But what's here now, is here for you. You're best off remembering the past, preparing for the future, but living in the present. The picture I chose is the cover art for a song that does a really good job of grounding me and making me hopeful. I don't think that's what it's actually about, but that's how I feel.

Hello, summer 2021!

Movie Review: Float

A 7-min animated short, Float was released on November 12, 2019. It has been available on Disney+ since its launch on the very same day and is listed as a Pixar Sparkshort. But it was released to Pixar's Youtube on February 26, 2021, making it available to the general public. It was directed and written by Bobby Rubio with the music composed by Barney Jones. The description reads, "A father discovers that his son is different from other kids in the most unusual way. To keep them both safe from judgment, Dad covers him and keeps him out of sight." Rubio based it heavily off of the interactions between him and his own autistic son and the short is said to be a metaphor for this.

Float introduces us to our father/son pairing, a loving duo innocently playing in their yard. All of a sudden, the son starts floating. The higher he goes, the happier he gets, but the more worried his father is. A few people see this, and immediately run and back away. The father realizes his son isn't normal and quickly grows scared of how other people would react.

Like any loving parent would, he tries to protect his son from possible criticisms. But as time goes on, it becomes clearer that his son's abnormality isn't just a way he expresses himself, it's a critical part of him. With it impossible to hide, the father winds up hiding his son away from the world, driving himself insane with other's opinions.

Skip forward a few years and they've both grown quite a bit. You can now see the stress of the situation embedded into the father's gritty appearance. The two go out, with the son on a leash and rocks in his backpack. The father's anxiety levels spike up at the smallest things. But for a moment, he looks off at the other kids in the playground longingly. While he was wishing he could take his kid inside, the son runs off.

What follows is a series of chaotic events when the father hunts down his floating kid. While he drags him out, the kid is screaming. All he wants is to play and have fun freely. He doesn't see the situation the way dad does and instead feels restricted. The father snaps and yells at him, "Why can't you just be normal?"

This is where I started crying. The young boy relents and puts on his hood. He gives up any happiness to be "normal." The father realizes what he'd done, and almost immediately tries to push the boy to embrace himself. His smile returns and all is well.

Like I said at the start, this is a metaphor for autism. Autistic kids are too often held to the standards of neurotypical kids when that simply isn't right. You don't take a paralytic and then call them weak because they can't play sports like an able-bodied person. The paralytic is strong in their own way, a way that we might miss if we're too busy making them feel bad for something they cannot control. The same applies to kids with autism. They could wield some of the most intelligent, most creative, most critical thinking minds in the world--but because they process things differently, adults will spend years trying to rewire them.

This is my second post talking about autism, but I myself am not actually autistic and I urge you to find the channels and pages of autistic people such as Paige Layle and Chloe Hayden/Princess Aspien for more personal accounts and go to organizations such as the National Autism Association for more information.

Poem Prompt: Giants

 Giants sleeping underneath.

Henna's voice tells you to retreat.

Keep it hush-hush, watch your feet.

Tread carefully around the kings.

Their synapses fie and twinkle,

bursting sky brinks and they sprinkle.

La grendeza, the brightest stars--

si los enfadas, no los puedes parar.

Moving so fast, shattering time.

Scoffin' at you and your damaged spine.

Queen of rings in the limelight

spins upon your cursed night.

Going brr, looks deep in your eye,

'Kali warns you of her battle tribe:

멈추진 않아 if you've tried it.

날카로운 날로 뭐든 베어, this is final.

Each tail spirals, damage reclines.

They've finessed life, fight on an incline.

Homie, fear the struggle of rewind.

They're rounding right back,

don't ever try to size up their pack.

They're living up, bigger than average.

While Yasuo's stunting, one man is damage.

Sleeping on giants is a punishment pact.

Butterfly Effect

The butterfly effect. As per request on Twitter(yes, I am taking any responses). It has been a hot minute since I've heard this phrase. For anyone who needs the reminder, as per Google's definition, "the phenomenon whereby a minute localized change in a complex system can have large effects elsewhere." In shorter terms, everything matters equally. You may think that you're just dropping a can in a lake. But then an animal mistakes it for food and eats it, this throws off the lake's ecosystem, and eventually, everything there dies. While you didn't directly cause the death of the lake, you aided in the series of events that did. It makes you think about everything really, you wind up weighing all of your actions with equal opportunities to cause damage. And I feel like applying that concept to human nature can be eye-opening.

Creation is a funny thing, in that nothing just happens. Everything has a reason. Everything that happens has its own place in the timespan of everything with a series of events that lead up to it. Acknowledging that even the most minuscule actions could have such a large effect on how a living being turns out could really help our world. Especially humans. Sometimes, yes, it is a birth disorder that's affecting how they view the world. But way too often, it's because someone refused to think their actions could have any lasting consequences.
This goes for both positive and negative outcomes. A random smile or compliment really can have a greater effect than you could even comprehend. Cleaning up a bit, focusing on yourself a little, offering a few words of encouragement. You can do so much for the world around you in just a few minutes. Will you notice immediately? Most of the time, no.
Also, science has been using this concept to cure and help people. As we learn about the human body and mind, we learn more about what causes things. Preventing these causes help prevent diseases, ailment, etc. We're discovering more about the mind and what causes mental illness. We can help to stop people from driving others to these conditions and also help to therapy someone back to health. When we know what is hurting a person, we can target it to help them.
This science extends to criminals. For decades, we've been studying what goes on in a violent criminal's mind. The goal is to see if we can find what triggers this to possibly prevent and/or remedy it. We'll see if we can set up a branch of mental care for them or if they need to be monitored from childhood. Maybe something happened in their lives that cause them to snap. Or maybe it's just something that people are born with.
Placing so much emphasis on the cause is important because it gives you a place to start. You have a target for treatment and a target for prevention. And targets, especially when improving the world, make the efforts a million times better. And, eventually, could make the world a million times better.

I'm experimenting with a new format a little bit. I liked how eye-catching the posts for Black History Month were, so I'll try to add more color to all of my posts. If you like follow me on any of my active social media, follow, and share it around!

Black History Month - Ending Statement 3/1/21

This Black History Month truly has been my best one yet. Personally and in my environment. I've spent so much time looking up people I had never heard of before, learning bits and pieces of history never spoken on before--I feel enlightened a bit. Also, this was my first time being relatively active on social media during this time. It was so nice seeing all the posts, links, stories, just random "reminder that you're a black queen!" posts. It was really great.

Now, Black History Month 2021 is over. My month-long blog showcase is now over.

While I won't be posting any more black heroes for a while, that doesn't mean they become any less important. Just because I don't post about them doesn't mean they aren't important. I'll do another post eventually with more black heroes.

To any readers out there, I want you to stay learning about and supporting minorities everywhere in their fight for equal rights, equal representation--equal everything. The goal is equality.

Black History Month - Erased Heroes 2/27/21

Ruby Bridges(1954 - Present Day)
Born in 1954, Bridges was born the year of Brown v, Board. Still, certain exams similar to voting literacy tests were put in place to bar African Americans from attending the all-white schools. At six-years-old, Ruby and five other black children were admitted entry to the schools. Two never left their original school, three went to a different all-white elementary, and Ruby went to William Frantz Elementary School alone. Police officers lead Bridges and her mother into the school as all the white parents gathered to hurl hideous slurs and threats at her. They pulled their children out of the school and only one teacher, Barbara Henry, was willing to teach her. The two spent the majority of the year alone together. Bridges' family received tons of backlash for this, such as unemployment, eviction, and shunning, but her mother especially persevered to ensure Ruby received the education that she and her husband and their parents had been denied. By the early 1970s, when Bridges graduated, she received her diploma from a desegregated school. She became a travel agent for fifteen years before becoming a full-time mother and author. She would write about her experiences in books such as Through My Eyes and This Is My Time, later receiving the Carter G. Woodson Book Award. In 1999, she established the Ruby Bridges Foundation to promote equality through education. Nowadays, Bridges has remained a lifelong activist and is alive and well at sixty-six years old.
